Canada Ontario Alpha Particles - Nuclei News: Season 9, Edition 3: OAP Welcome New Season, Wish Biznow United Well in League Cup Final

The Alphas have had quite the season. Early predictions saw them finishing mid-table but not having to worry about an international cup and an early exit from the national cup gave them the change they needed to make a charge up the standings finishing third.

It was a season of fantastic feats. Up front Michal Himper finished 5th in league scoring with 32 goals in just under 36 games of playing time. The true victory in this season was on the back line. Lead by Canadian international Tyson Borden playing alongside fellow CB Thom Knight and SBs Allan McDermott and Darren Barber, the foursome carried the workload on defence. Goalkeeper Rod MacNeil will be the first to give credit where credit is due:

"They were fantastic in front of me this year, everyone was," said the league's top goalkeeper. "It makes my job easier when I can rely on my teammates to cover open men and force players into awkward shots and constantly pressuring. It's a fantastic honour winning the clean sheet award but the real glory is due to the 10 men in front of me."

The defensive-minded Alphas surrendered the fewest goals this season in the league giving up 14 in 42 games, a staggering goal against every third game. Add that to the league's 4th best offence scoring at a clip of 2.2G/game and its no wonder why the Alphas finished a respectable third.

"We really benefited from consistent play this season. We never really got in a funk and slumped. A couple games is all it takes to tank a season" said captain Tyson Borden. "We need to keep this mentality moving forward."

The Alphas bowed out in the second round of the League Cup as their top players were participating in out-of-town training exercises in preparation for next season, a season that looks bright given the club's qualification for the Champions' League and the financial benefits that come with it.

Granted, it won't be all hard work for the training-camp-bound Alphas. They've openly supported Biznow United on their quest for the League Cup. The 7th ranked Biznows will challenge the 1st place Stimulators in the finals.

"Biznow United probably sported the best kits of all time. Not sure if they modeled them after their manager's favourite attire, but they were something back in the day. If a team can win wearing those, they've earned our respect" said canucks357 referring to their kits that resembled a topless man wearing a banana hammock. "I just wish them better luck in the final than they're having in the Yahoo pool. The poor guy is nowhere near poised to defend the inaugural title."
