Grassmen† - Boychuk out for 20 days-Grassmen acquire Goalie Stand-In
Field of Grass, (January 18, 2011) – Grassmen announced today that their main goalkeeper Johan Boychuk must undergo a 20 day period of recovery after suffering meniscus damage to his right knee on the last day of training camp.
Boychuk suffered the injury when he collided with a teammate during practice. No names were mentioned but Gilles Commony seemed very sheepish when reporters canvassed the locker room. The goalkeeper was forced to leave the pitch in tears of pain. Clearly not as tough as any of the guys on the Icemen roster who typically play through this sort of pain.
The absence of the goalkeeper could be big problem for manager Robert MacNeill. Boychuk has played amazing for the Grassmen in seasons 1 and 2 ensuring the Grassmen were the top team in Canada in goals against both seasons.
Today is the opening game of season three and the Grassmen go without Boychuk for the first time in the young history of the franchise. Grassmen Manager Robert MacNeill scrambled this morning to sign a new keeper and announced that the club has acquired goalkeeper Cláudio Paiva from Portugal.
"We are very familiar with Cláudio Paiva’s ability in goal and we are pleased to welcome him to the Grassmen," said Manager MacNeill. "He is a solid, young goalkeeper with a couple seasons under his belt, and we fully expect him to fill in nicely while Boychuk recovers. This move will permit us to have greater flexibility with future moves to strengthen our team." MacNeil continues, "We want to wish Johan a speedy recovery.”
Cláudio Paiva started 33 league matches and 5 National Cup games for his division II.1 team in Portugal in seasons 1 and 2.
